The goal of this special is train engineers that understand the operation of modern communication systems, are aware of the potential security, privacy, and reliability problems in those systems, and are capable of using the state-of-the-art solutions and tools to handle those problems. The competencies obtainable in this special include the following: operating principles, architecture, and security of wireless communication systems; theory and practice of highly reliable network architectures; theory and practical application of cryptographic techniques; operating and design principles of network security protocols; network security in practice.
